The rose has governed secrets since antiquity. Cupid was said to have offered a rose to Harpocrates — the god of silence, secrets, and confidentiality — as a bribe to stay quiet about Venus' indiscretions. The rose became the emblem of things spoken in confidence "under the rose." An opposing symbol was the vine. Sub vino. Under the vine — meaning under the influence of wine — was the state of being intoxicated, of music played too loud or words said too freely. The Romans understood that these two forces were always in the room together. This guitar can be thought of as both sub rosa and sub vino. Although this is a fully functional electric instrument, it was design to spend most of it's life as "wall jewelry." But it's never really asleep — it is always listening. The strings resonate with every sound that fills the room — conversation, laughter, argument, music — the vibrations move the magnetic field of the pickups, converting it all into electrical signals. It has heard everything, but says nothing out loud. Until it's plugged in. Although it hangs in beautiful silence, at any moment it has the power to get very loud and very rowdy.
